Creative Hockey photography with the BMHA Barrie Colts…
Two of my passions, photography and hockey crossover now and then. I’ve been fortunate to coach hockey with the Barrie Minor Hockey Association for several years now. It continues to be one of the most rewarding experiences year in and out. I’ve enjoyed teaching the game while watching young men grow through teamwork and competition.
Spring is peeking its head out and that marks the transition from one of my passions to the other. I’m trading my hockey stick for my Nikon… but before I do, there was one last blast of fun with the boys! We hit the ice for one last session at the Barrie Molson Centre, where the fellas huddled around getting their “flow” just right. I’d say this is just for the photos, but proper flow isn’t something to mess with when it comes to hockey players – the better the hat-head, the better the flow.
It wasn’t always this way, for years I was a weekend warrior with my point ‘n shoot camera at my family outings. I was also a rabid hockey fan questioning the various coaching decisions made by my beloved Toronto Maple Leafs coaching staffs. A few years back I decided to cast off the bow lines and and learn how to properly use my camera. This was also around the same time I climbed behind the bench and began learning the coaching ropes as well. I’ve never looked back, I had finally sacked-up and followed both passions.
This is the advice I leave for the fellas… find your passion… love it and do it fearlessly.
