First Look Alternatives on Your Wedding Day
Keeping the magic without breaking tradition.
First look wedding photos have been popular for many years. In my professional experience as a wedding photographer, I would say that 75-80% of the weddings I photograph include a first look. That doesn’t mean they’re for everyone, though - there’s something to be said for tradition.
Traditions play a huge role in our lives by providing a sense of connection with our heritage. They create shared experiences that strengthen bonds with our family and friends through a sense of nostalgia and belonging.
If you’re not sold on a first look but still want an intimate moment with your partner before the ceremony, I’ve put together some alternative ideas to consider.
1. First Touch
In my experience, the first touch is the most common alternative to the first look. It can happen in a couple of ways such as standing back-to-back or reaching around a corner. In either case, you won’t see each other but you’ll create an intimate moment with a simple touch from your partner. During this time, some couples prepare private vows to share with one another.
2. Letter / Gift Exchange
During the ceremony, you know there are a lot of guests hanging on your every word which can make you feel a bit guarded - it’s just part of the experience. One way to express yourselves fully, away from prying eyes, is to write love letters to each other. This intimate exchange allows you to share some tears and laughter meant just for you, setting a heartfelt tone for the rest of the day.
3. Bait & Switch
If you’re up for a little pre-wedding mischief, this is a hilarious option for your first look. Imagine your fun-loving partner turning around for your first look only to be greeted by a friend or family member decked out in a wedding dress! The laughter will be off the charts and it’s a perfect way to shake off any wedding jitters. I still remember the roars of laughter when I photographed this funny first look above.
3. Father / Daughter First Look
As a Dad myself, I totally feel this one each and every time. That moment when a father first sees his daughter in her wedding dress is pure magic. You can see the pride and love lighting up his face, and I swear there’s not a dry eye in the house. It’s one of those memories that sticks with you, tugging at your heartstrings and reminding everyone just how special that bond is. Later in the evening they can share in their father/daughter dance as well.
4. First Shot
Feeling a little adventurous? Start your wedding day with a celebratory First Shot! Whether you’re into tequila, vodka or maybe your own custom his/her drink - sharing a drink with your partner is the perfect way to calm those pre-ceremony nerves and kick off the party vibe early. Cheers to the new chapter ahead!
5. Include Your Furry Friends
If you’re a fur-parent, why not have a include your pet in the moment. Afterwards you can do a mini photo session with them. It’s a cute way to include them in your day, especially if they’ll be cared for by someone else later on during the ceremony and reception.
Your wedding day is all about you and your love story so get as creative as you like. Whether it’s a heartfelt moment, a fun surprise or both - these pre-ceremony options will help you celebrate your unique bond while maintaining that magical aisle moment.
