Old Fashion Ice Cream at the Cottage
Old fashion hand-cranked ice cream at the cottage
Cottage time means breaking out the old school hand-crank ice cream-inator. We've been spending summers at the family cottage in Northern Ontario for something like 35 years or so and there are traditions that are stronger than ever - tubin', bonfires, fish-fries and homemade ice cream! The kids fall line and stand their ground as I try to find the weak point in the lineup. But when it comes to ice cream, they show no mercy on an old fart like me - elbows up and high-pitched voices sound off at a 10.
The path to creamy righteousness begins with a little bit of cream and a shit load of mushed strawberries wrapped tight in ice and salt. With the ancient secret recipe (see below) carefully housed in the center cylinder, ice is slid down between the wooden exterior and inner goodness tube. Rock salt is then dropped all around the ice before the mightiest of the bunch step up to begin cranking the hell out of this temperamental #@&*.
PRO TIP: Have an extra few arms on the ready because the further along the cranking goes, the harder it gets. I mean crack-another-beer, hard. With everyone's arm now in a sling, it's time for the hardest part of all... waiting. Let the ice cream-inator sit for at least an hour to freeze up - and I tell ya, it gets crazy hard! But the result is so worth it... the old fashion ice creamy goodness will blow your mind.
